What is BTU and why does it matter?

Final BTU requirement might be around 1,200–1,300 BTU/hr.

Factors that increase or decrease BTU requirement

External walls: Each external wall increases heat loss and BTU demand.

Windows and glazing: Single glazing needs more BTU than modern double or triple glazing.

Insulation level: Older, draughty homes need more BTU than well‑insulated properties.

Gas boilers vs low‑temperature systems (heat pumps)
Most UK radiators are rated at ΔT50 (standard boiler flow temperature). If you run a lower‑temperature system (such as a heat pump), the actual radiator output will be lower, and you may need larger radiators to achieve the same BTU.
